Two trees, and the garden Enoch is shown

Enoch smells a tree of wisdom whose fruit is for the elect after the judgment. It is not framed as the tree of the first trespass. Knowledge, in this book, comes in at least two species.

The Watchers’ knowledge is stolen staff-knowledge: how the house is run. The tree Enoch is shown is eschatological food. The first pair’s tree in Genesis is a third thing: a commandment with a death on it. The corpus lets all three stand.

To exist, in Enochic terms, is not the same as to know. The luminaries know their gates because they were sworn. Humans know because they were told, or because they were taught by deserters, or because they will be fed in a garden at the end. The three knowledges are not equal.

This is why the present library can describe the two hundred without enrolling. Description is Enoch’s job: he is the scribe of righteousness, not the disciple of Shemihazah. The forbidden teachings are catalogued so they can be recognized. Recognition is the authorized use of a leaked syllabus.
