Existence/1 Enoch 72–82
Time as obedience
The 364-day year
Uriel shows a sun that moves through six gates, a moon that cannot quite keep up, four intercalary days, and a year of 364. Sinners will make the luminaries err. Calendar is a moral fact.
Shamsiel, Sariel, Kokabiel, Baraqiel, and Yomiel all taught time. The Astronomical Book is the lawsuit against them, written as a manual. Count this way. Do not count the other way. The four hinges of the year are not Watcher-feasts; they are structural members.
When the book says that in the days of sinners the moon will not appear at her time and the sun will err, it is not predicting astronomy. It is accusing a people of living in a stolen year. To exist in the wrong calendar is already to have left one’s station, as the Watchers left theirs.
Qumran’s 364-day piety is this chapter with a community around it. The later Jewish lunisolar year is the other side of a fight 1 Enoch thought it had won.
