Existence/1 Enoch 69:13–25

Existence as a legal fact

The oath that holds the world

Chapter 69 claims that heaven, earth, sea, depths, and the storehouses stand because they were sworn. The Watchers’ crime is not only desire. It is leaking the grammar of that oath.

Kasbeel, called chief of the oath, asked Michael to show him the hidden Name so that he might mention it in the oath. The text will not write the Name. It will write the effects: the sky hangs, the earth is founded, the sea is bounded, the depths tremble, the sun and moon complete their courses, the winds are weighed, and the spirits of the waters, winds, and all breezes know their path from that oath.

This is the Enochic theory of existence. The world is not a machine and not a birth. It is a spoken bond. Things remain what they are because they were addressed and they answered. To exist is to have been named in a court.

Bezaliel’s host taught the shape of this without the letters. That is already too much. A people who believe the world is a contract will eventually try to amend it. The flood is, among other things, a lawsuit.

3 Enoch will later teach the letters of creation as a fenced merkabah science. The difference is permission. The Watchers still remembered how the post was made after they had left the post.
