Teachings/1 Enoch 7–8

Enchantments

Names, knots, whispers, and the bending of will

Shemihazah’s primary art. Enchantment here is not stage-magic: it is the use of names, knots, and whispered speech to bind a will the way the oath bound the host.

What was given away

  • Spoken names that fasten a spirit to a body
  • Knot-magic and cords as portable oaths
  • Whispered charms (laḥash) that bypass the ordinary ear
  • Night-school methods: fear, vigil, and dream-suggestion

Why the book calls it forbidden

It treats a person as a knot to be picked. The Book of Watchers frames this as the interior version of the Watchers’ own trespass: they were bound, so they taught binding.

What became of it

Amulets, whisper-charms, and later Jewish and Christian anxieties about ‘whisperers’ all sit downstream. Armaros’s counter-charms make the market two-sided.
