Teachings/1 Enoch 7:1; 8:3; 69:12

Root-cuttings and stolen medicine

Plants, wombs, and the first pharmacopeia

Paired with enchantments in 1 Enoch 8. Roots are not only drugs; they are lineages. To cut a root is to cut a line. Kasdeja later adds the embryo and the serpent’s bite.

What was given away

  • Which roots to cut, and in which hour
  • Herbs analogized to bloodlines
  • Remedies that also open or close the womb
  • Kasdeja’s smitings of the embryo, the soul, and the serpent’s bite

Why the book calls it forbidden

The text does not forbid medicine as such. It forbids a medicine that arrives as a Watcher’s dowry, mixed with enchantment, and used on the children of mixed unions and on the unborn.

What became of it

Antediluvian pharmacy becomes, in later legend, both the origin of healing and the origin of poison. The same plant does both. That double is the point.
