Teachings/1 Enoch 8:1
The metals of the earth
Ore, alloy, furnace, and the industrial fall
Azazel/Asael teaches the working of the metals of the earth. Before jewelry and kohl, there is the furnace. This is the antediluvian smithy.
What was given away
- Finding and smelting ore
- Hardening, alloying, and the thought that designs a tool
- The kiln as a solar and stellar organ
- Metal as stored lightning
Why the book calls it forbidden
Not technology as such — Tubal-cain is in Genesis without Enoch’s panic — but technology as a Watcher’s dowry, arriving in the same breath as war and desire. The furnace is never only a furnace.
What became of it
Later readers (and some Church Fathers) treat this as the origin of the arms race. The Book of Watchers treats it as the origin of a certain kind of civilization: armed, adorned, and unable to go back.
