Teachings/1 Enoch 8:1–2
Kohl, stones, and tinctures
The other half of Azazel’s revelation
The same verse that gives swords gives bracelets, ornaments, antimony for the eyelids, precious stones, and all coloring tinctures. The Book of Watchers refuses to separate the arts of killing and the arts of being desired.
What was given away
- Kohl and the glance as a weapon
- Jewelry as stored glory, cut from the stones of fire
- Dyes that assign a rank the wearer was not given
- Beautifying as a social technology of the mixed marriages
Why the book calls it forbidden
Because it is listed with swords. The text’s moral is structural: a civilization that can paint a face and forge a blade has been given the means to multiply both desire and death.
What became of it
Patristic readings often moralize this as vanity. The Enochic point is sharper: cosmetics are metallurgy of the skin, taught by the same angel.
