Teachings/1 Enoch 8:3; 73–74

The course of the moon

A more intimate clock, and the nights it is gone

Sariel teaches the moon’s course; Satariel teaches concealment in its absence. The Astronomical Book treats the moon as a slightly insubordinate luminary. The Watchers prefer that insubordination.

What was given away

  • Phases, gates, and the 177-day half-year
  • Months at odds with the solar 364
  • The moon over tide, wound, and womb
  • Dark-moon concealment and eclipse as cloak

Why the book calls it forbidden

A calendar of nights is closer to bodies, and therefore closer to the mixed marriages. It is also a rival to the solar year the Enochic authors consider holy.

What became of it

Lunar piety, menstrual and tidal lore, and every argument about whether Israel is ‘under mazal’ inherit this split.
